He was born in Modena to the notary Giovanni and Verde Alberghetti, in an unspecified year between 1445 and 1451. Since 1496 he was the powerful Datarius of the Roman Curia, regent of the assignments of benefits and handouts. In September 1500 he was created cardinal. He died in Rome on 20 July 1502, poisoned by his servant Sebastiano Pinzoni da Cremona.
